Life Doesn’t Start AFTER You Reach Your Financial Goals

By: Alexandria Hall, MA, Marketing Director

Do you recall making a list of life’s goals and milestones when you were younger? For some, getting married, buying, or building a home, having children, and securing a dream career before the age of thirty represents the ultimate checklist of success. However, as you get older, you quickly realize how different the timing of life may be when your goals finally come to fruition. You realize life looks quite different than how you first dreamt during your years of Adolescence. Putting your life on hold in hopes of reaching your goals faster is not always worth sacrificing the experiences and moments that make life meaningful today.

I, personally, am continuing to find ways to enrich my circumstances in all areas of life. This is not a result of dissatisfaction, but simply because life has so much to offer if we have the courage to seize it. “The sky’s the limit” as the saying goes.

As an entrepreneur and wife, I strive to push the envelope a little more each day to see how far I can exceed my goals both professionally and financially for the betterment of my family’s future. And I would encourage you to do the same. However, this is not an excuse for reckless spending or ignoring budgets. In fact, this is a gentle reminder to allow yourself the freedom to enjoy life’s splendors while striving toward your financial goals. You have the capability to find ways to enrich your life without reckless spending or draining your savings account.

Create a “Guilt-Free Spending” Category

So, what is one of the smartest ways to strike a balance between saving for the future and enjoying the present? Create a resolute “guilt-free spending” category within your budget.

This does not mean setting aside thousands of dollars for impulse purchases. Instead, it is about intentionally allocating a reasonable amount of money for experiences, hobbies, travel, dining out, or other purchases that bring you joy—without feeling like you are compromising your long-term financial goals.

Think of it as a savings account for enjoyment. By consistently contributing even $50 to $100 from each paycheck, you can gradually build a fund designated specifically for the things you value most. Over time, those small contributions can add up faster than you might expect.

A guilt-free fund allows you to reward yourself along the way while remaining committed to your larger financial objectives. After all, a well-designed financial plan should help you prepare for tomorrow without preventing you from enjoying today.

Celebrating Progress Along the Way

To ensure you do not find yourself suffering from financial burnout, it is important to reward yourself in smaller gestures and allow yourself to celebrate the little wins. These wins could be financial, professional, or personal milestones such as:

  • Paying off your credit card
  • Reaching a savings goal
  • Purchasing land or a home
  • Receiving a promotion
  • Enjoying a birthday milestone

No matter the reason, do not wait until you reach the finish line to acknowledge your hard work. Allowing yourself to enjoy small rewards along the way can help reinforce positive financial habits and keep you motivated toward your long-term goals.

Finding Your Balance

In conclusion, creating and working towards financial goals provides a sense of direction and purpose to create more possibilities for your future. Financial planning should support the life you dream of living without replacing the days you are living now. Your budget, both for your family and your personal funds, should include room for future financial goals and creating memorable experiences in your current season. I will soon be celebrating the empowering milestone of turning 30 years old this summer! To celebrate, I am accumulating for myself a “guilt-free spending” sum to enjoy during my summer travels to mark this momentous occasion. The season of life you are currently living only comes around once; make sure you remember to keep living while preparing for tomorrow.
