Life Disruption
BY: JIMMY J. WILLIAMS, CPA/PFS, CFP®, CRPC™
You are prepared to retire in five years having saved sufficiently all of your career. Your health is good and you have confidence you will be fine during the next phase of life. Then… your health suddenly becomes an issue. A doctor’s visit becomes a referral to a cancer specialist. As fear starts to invade your otherwise calm and confident mindset, you need someone who has experience in these types of life disruptions to guide you through the maze of challenges that lie ahead.
If the above scenario sounds far too familiar, it is. One of the most difficult challenges of life is to think everything is accounted for and you are doing well in your preparations for a future of travel, family and supporting your favorite civic group. However, as I often state to our clients, “life gets in the way.” If only the plan for the future could be an arrow upward in a straight glidepath, we would never need to plan for contingencies such as a health scare.
Do you have your estate documents in good order? Have you planned to appoint a successor heath care proxy should your mate or current appointee become unable to serve in the role? What about your physician’s directive? Does the current situation change your mind about life sustaining hydration and nutrition in light of the possible terminal illness? The importance of maintaining these documents in a current status is to provide you, and your family, with the confidence that you are prepared for life’s inevitable disruptions.
Have you provided your spouse with the names, addresses and account numbers of your life insurance policies and carriers? What about your pension earned decades earlier awaiting you to reach the age of distribution? Have you given the information to your spouse to claim the potential spousal benefits? When reviewing your employee benefits each year, consider your beneficiaries on life insurance, retirement accounts and trusted contact for purposes of communicating for you when you are incapable of doing so.

A glimpse on how OUR TEAM spent their Labor Day weekends!
As a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor™ professional, we believe it is in the client’s best interest to focus on the most important matters instead of only their money. When facing a life-or death situation, priorities quickly realign to become more about health, family, and lifestyle and less about how well the stock portfolio is doing. Of course, a reasonable rate of return is always a desire but it pales in priority compared to months of chemotherapy or radiation to attempt to regain your health.
My sister was diagnosed with acute leukemia. She had three children at home ages, 12, 8 and 3. The news was devastating to our family! Her husband and she had moved into their new home only a few weeks when the phone rang to deliver this life challenging diagnosis. Her doctor asked her to make an appointment as soon as possible to begin the treatment for this disease. Fast forward a year. My energetic, vibrant sister lay in a hospital bed with tubes attached to her body to keep her alive. She did not have a physician’s directive or Do Not Resuscitate Form prepared for such an event. Why? I failed to mention that she was only thirty-five years of age.
We are not in control of all aspects of life. However, we should take initiative and be proactive on the matters that we can control. Seek out a review of your life plan, or to assist you in the preparation of one, by contacting a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER practitioner who specializes in comprehensive life planning. As an old Boy Scout, I am often reminded of the motto “Be Prepared” which should be a mantra for all of us. Fear of life fades in the path of active and intentional planning. You see, life is far more than the money you possess. Ayn Rand, in her bestselling novel, “Atlas Shrugged,” is attributed with one of my favorite quotes about money: “Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver.” Life is a highway, lace up your shoes and start walking to enjoy it!
